The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola has outlined the giant strides recorded so far in the Ministry.

He disclosed this during an interactive session and luncheon with the league of Maritime editors with the theme “Achieving the gains of the Maritime and Blue Economy’s agenda for Maritime industry “at Eko Le Meridian, Victoria Island, Lagos.

While presenting the activities of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Honourable Minister highlighted the significant achievements recorded in the following areas: port infrastructure and connectivity, fisheries and aquculture, port operational efficiency, Blue Economy development, Maritime security and safety, shipping and Maritime trade international protocols and engagements.

On Inland Waterways he commended the Authority and said NIWA has commenced hydrographic survey/ charting of River Niger and consultancy services towards dredging of Inland Waterways, the Ministry commissioned a staff clinic, administrative block, and conference hall at the NIWA headquarters to enhance operations. He further stated that the Ministry has launched the Inland Waterways Transportation Regulations 2023(Waterways transportation code) to regulate the activities of vessels navigating the inland waterways.

The Ministry through NIWA has commenced the procurement of 2000 units of high-capacity life jackets for free distribution to aid passengers’ safety on the Inland Waterways. NIWA also has recruited 350 River Marshals to uphold safety code within six months to guide boat operators,regulate and conduct of passengers, and provide a framework for investment, amongst others.

The Minister also gave a spotlight on other sister agencies. Senior ministry officials, all CEOs under the Ministry were in attendance,including the MD/CEO of NIWA, Bola Oyebamiji FCIB, Engr. Sarat Braimoh, Lagos Area manager and Suleiman Makama AGM (Corporate Affairs)
