The Acting Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Alhaji Umar Yusuf Girei, has formally assumed office and addressed members of staff during a general meeting held at the Authority’s Headquarters in Lokoja.
In his address, Alhaji Girei called for the cooperation, support, and dedication of all staff as the Authority navigates the transition period. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and collective commitment in advancing NIWA’s mandate and achieving its strategic objectives.
The Acting Managing Director expressed appreciation to the immediate past Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, FCIB, for his service and contributions to the growth of the Authority. He highlighted key milestones recorded during his tenure, including the commissioning of projects at the Headquarters, the unveiling of the Inland Waterways Transportation Code, sustained stakeholder engagement on safety and security, the inauguration of NIWA River Marshals, and nationwide sensitization campaigns on waterways safety, including the distribution of life jackets.
Alhaji Girei reaffirmed his commitment to providing purposeful leadership and noted his enthusiasm about working closely with staff to further drive NIWA’s mission and vision. He assured employees of his readiness to build on existing achievements and strengthen the Authority’s role in the development and management of Nigeria’s inland waterways.
