Regulatory Services

We issue licenses for inland navigation, piers, jetties and dockyards; examine and survey inland watercraft and shipyard operators, grant permit and licenses for sand dredging, pipeline construction, dredging of slot and approve designs and construction of inland river crafts.

Transport Services

NIWA is equipped with a number of vessels enabling us to operate ferry services (for economic goods and passengers) and run cruise boats (for tourism and leisure).

Engineering

Our wide range of engineering services include construction of inland river-ports and jetties. We also undertake capital and maintenance dredging; engineering design of river ports.

Environmental Services

We pursue an ecological sound inland water transportation policy. Due consideration is given to the well-being of aquatic life as well as the clearing of water hyacinth and other harmful aquatic weeds. We are also authorized to “carry out environmental impact assessment of navigation and other dredging activities within the inland water and its right -of -ways”. We are ever determined to work in harmony with nature.

Marine

As part of our marine services, we remove and receive derelicts wrecks and other obstructions from inland waterways; clear hyacinth and other harmful weeds, and boats construction, repairs and dockyard services

Survey

Hydrological and hydrographic surveys, river chart production and cartography, river mapping, aerial survey. We provide hydraulic structures for river dams, bed and bank stabilization, barrages and groynes; install and maintain lights, buoys and all navigational aids along all water channels and banks.

Safety and Security

To ensure safety and security of goods and passengers, and sustain all year round navigation on the inland waterways, the Authority has put in place the following Safety and Security Measures:

An Inland Waterways Transportation Code, which specifies offences and penalties to make water transportation safe and secured

Formation of the Nigerian Waterways Emergency Preparedness and Response Unit (NEWEPRU).

Procured Security Patrol Boats with soft security apparatus (vessel tracking system) to enhance security surveillance by Inland Waterways Police Command.

Procured Waterbus Ambulances to provide First Aid in accident cases;

Provided Water Mobile Workshops for emergency repairs of ferries and boats on waterways;

Procured Dredger for maintenance dredging of river channels and clearing of blocked waterways;

Floating Mobile Workshop;
